Project |01

Drawn Together
writter by Amy and Vicky Howell
directed by Vicky Howell
November 2015

Systir Productions

This project was a wonderful collaboration with Systir Productions (London, UK) and the highly talented chilean composer, Patrick Moore.

Our work, consisted of making a cohesive world, putting together animation and real world images, getting as a result a beautiful analogy of how two unknown people can get connected.

Thus, animation was the place where these two individuals were able to find each other, so all sonic elements were thought to recreate epic and magical environments. On the contrary, real life, was routine and repetition, which can also be experienced through the music and complimentary sound effects. Therefore, the goal of sound design in this production was to make the audience able to experience the same emotions the protagonists were going through.

Drawn Together has had a very good reception in various festivals in Europe, including Aesthetic Short Film Festival ASFF 2016, Ouchy Film Awards 2016 and UK Screen One Film Festival 2017, among others.

Neisius a Documentary
December 2016

Roadline Film Producciones

Directed by Joaquin Matamala

This documentary narrates Helga Neisius's life, a immigrant woman who emerged during the 20th Century as one of the most prominent musicians in the Region of Valparaiso, Chile. Her journey is an example of how women began to build social protagonism in Latin America, through music and art.

Her life moves from teaching to touring, and empowering many generations of women through their accordions.

Currently, Helga is 96 years old, and her legacy continues to reach new generations of men and women.

My role for this particular project was dialogue and ambience restoration, and for many scenes, including the one showed here, it was necessary to completely recreate all the ambience, Foley and diegetic music. The idea was to imitate, as close as posible, all the sounds created by the actions of the characters, as if they came from that particular location.

Cañuela & Petaca  Animated Series
Work in Progress

NubeRoja Films

Chile

This series is based on the short tale written by chilean author Baldomero Lillo. It narrates life and adventures of two cousins, Cañuela and Petaca, living in the country side, at the beginning of the 20th century. Although life may seem quite different back then, children have to deal with the same challenges as in any era: finding new ways of having fun and making new friends

My role for this particular project is as a script writer, producer and sound designer. This is definitely one of my favorite projects, and we are hoping to get the funding to finally make it true.

Hamlet by William Shakespeare
Fecruary 2010

Nancy T. Hansen Theatre, Purdue Theatre

Directed by Richard Sullivan Lee

In Hamlet, Shakespeare gives us a story about a young prince who is forced to make life choices after the dead of his father, which makes him change all his beliefs about his own life, love and even himself. Sound design uses the idea of "earthy sounds", which have a strong emotional connection to the rhythm of the body. These manifest through the use of drums and wind. I composed all the music for this production, which plays as underscoring, transition for scenes and musical themes. These themes evolve to become either of the previous elements, and relate directly to the emotions that the main characters go through the play. Sound effects also helped to emotionally emphasize the visual elements that are the main traits of Denmark's world.

Amadeus by Peter Shaffer
November 2010

Nancy T. Hansen Theatre, Purdue Theatre

Directed by Kristine Holtvedt

Since the music for transition and underscoring and many of the sound effects are already part of the script, the sound design for this show focused on three additional aspects of design. The first aspect involves the sound designer locating performances of the music that were appropriate for inclusion in the play and creating sound effects that contribute to the emotional journey. The second aspect involves the sound designer’s work with the director and the actors to incorporate the music in the acting and the characters’ journeys. In this capacity the sound designer acts similar to the conductor in an opera during the rehearsal process. The third aspect involves the sound designer developing a sound system that will help the audience experience Salieri’s emotional journey through Mozart’s music and the play’s sounds. The sound system will allow processing the sounds to change their sonic quality, mixing playback levels to underscore Salieri’s internal emotions, and locating the music in the appropriate physical space of the theatre. A surround sound system will help the audience experience Mozart’s music in the same way Salieri does, and increase their identification with the struggles of the protagonist. The goal of the sound design in this production, then, is to implement the sound design begun by Shafer in a way that draws the audience deeper into the emotional world of the play

Peal
Written and directed by Sandra Venegas Córdova
Sound design by Sandra Venegas Córdova
2007

Peal was created as an exercise to work every aspect of an audio & visual production from scratch. This includes coming up with an original idea, writing the script, casting and directing the actors, filming and editing the material, to finally create the entire sound palette (recording original sound effects, foley, ADR), plus working on the final sound mix.

All this process was accomplished in about four months.
